I’ve Gone Adventurin’
Abi’s story joining Singapore’s most Adventurous Enterprise
Growing up, my favourite books to read were found in the science fiction section. And that’s not just due to spaceships, time travel, and how mindbogglingly awesome physics is — it was because a lot of them were hopeful. To a teenager who was growing increasingly despondent with the planet by watching the news, Asimov and Clarke offered the hope of humankind rising above the challenges it faces, and changing the world for the better.
That’s why I’m supremely excited that I’m joining Gone Adventurin’!
I grew up in Chennai — a bustlingly quiet metropolis in South India — and in 2009, moved to Singapore — a quietly tenacious island — for university. While there, studying mechanical engineering and design thinking, I had the opportunity to experiment and fall in love with photography, and film-making. Under the Design-Centric programme, I had the chance to learn and understand sustainability and the challenges facing it. Through film-making and photography, I saw the power of storytelling to bring about change.
I’m one of those people who’s shielded myself away from specialisation my whole life — and so existing in these seemingly unrelated worlds was never a problem. When it came time to decide what I would do after university though, it was a whole new confusing world out there.
That’s why when I found out about Gone Adventurin’, I was pumped. Here was a chance to combine several things I was interested in and work with some amazing people at the same time!
I’m increasingly convinced that the only anti-fragile solution to sustainability would be something that was ground up, and deeply involving people and communities.
I feel that there is no one magical big idea that will solve all our problems, and that many small, local ideas can make the difference instead in creating lasting sustainable change.
Gone Adventurin’s core values of helping companies make sustainability a part of their core business, and working with communities to create lasting social impact — are both values that I deeply resonate with. Add to this the fact that we use the power of film-making and storytelling to amplify the impact — and it has ‘dream job’ written all over it!
I can’t wait to see what the future holds, and along with Gone Adventurin’, play my part to help make a change for the better!
